Louis P. Nelson, Professor of Architectural History and the Vice Provost for Academic Outreach in the Office of the Provost
Mr. Nelson is the primary advocate and representative for community engagement, public service, and academic outreach programs across the University.
Mr. Nelson is a specialist in the built environments of the early modern Atlantic world, with published work on the American South, the Caribbean, and West Africa. His current research engages the spaces of enslavement in West Africa and in the Americas, where he is working to document and interpret the buildings and landscapes that shaped the trans-Atlantic slave trade. He has a second collaborative project working to understand the University of Virginia as a landscape of slavery.
That important work, combined with the events of August 2017, led to Nelson's co-edited book of essays: Charlottesville 2017: The Legacy of Race and Inequity; and increased focus on outreach into the local community. His first-hand experience with the recent conflicts in Charlottesville combined with his enslaved labor research brings an informed scholarly perspective to global racial issues, historical and present, makes Nelson a sought-after speaker in Charlottesville, across the country, and internationally.
In his role as Vice Provost, Mr. Nelson serves as the chief advisor to the executive vice president and provost on all academic matters relating to community engagement and public service and he oversees numerous related academic units at the University including the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service, the Virginia Humanities, the Center for Liberal Arts, and the Virginia College Advising Corps. He is also a celebrated teacher, having won the University Teaching Award in Spring 2007 (the highest recognition for excellence in teaching at UVA) and serving as the 2008 UVA nominee for a state-wide Outstanding Faculty Award. He is currently the president of his professional organization, the Vernacular Architecture Forum. Popular among travelers, Louis has previously participated in Cavalier Travels trips to Italy and Cuba.
